Maybe you are wondering, what is an Apologist? An Apologist is some who studies apologetics.
What is apologetics? If is from the Greek word "apologia", which is translated "defense" in the verse from the Bible:
1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Apologetics is the intellectual defense of the Christian faith. It's important for us to be prepared to answer questions like, "How do you know the Bible is reliable?" or "How do you know Jesus is the only way?" Part of my passion to be on campus to answer these questions for skeptics that realize the emptiness of life without Christ, but have doubts because of a lack of knowledge of Christianity. We also want to prepare Christians students to answer these questions and not be influenced away from Christ by challenges to their faith, but be equipped to influence others toward Him.
Although being prepared to answer these questions is important. The most important truth we can share is the gospel and our testimony of how Jesus has changed our lives. But we still need to endeavor to be ready to answer the important and prevalent questions we may encounter.
Some people feel intimidated in sharing the gospel because they are afraid will not be able to answer difficult questions. It's ok to say, "I don't know how to answer that question, but I can back to you on that. [Thank you for helping me learn!]"
If we knew all the answers about God, he would be too small. If I could answer every question about Him, that means He is small enough to be understood by my finite brain, and He would be unworthy of our worship. Thankfully He is infinite, powerful, loving, perfect, and holy.
